FUNCIONES DEL "SIMPLE PAST" El "simple past" se utiliza para hablar de una  acción que concluyó  en un tiempo  anterior al actual . La duración no es relevante. El tiempo en que se sitúa la acción puede ser el pasado reciente o un pasado lejano. EJEMPLOS John Cabot  sailed  to America in 1498. My father  died  last year. He  lived  in Fiji in 1976. We  crossed  the Channel yesterday. El past simple El past simple se utiliza para hablar de acciones ya concluidas en el pasado. Este tiempo verbal puede traducirse al   español por: yo canté, tú cantaste, él cantó, etc. Use of Past Progressive Past continuous , o  past progressive,  se utiliza en inglés para acciones que se encuentran en curso o en progresión en un momento determinado del pasado. It is best to avoid using ‘used to’ in negative forms or questions although some native speakers do this in informal situations. It is better to use the Past Simple in those situations. WAS/WERE GOING TO, WAS/WERE SUPPOSED TO

Usaremos was/were going to para hablar sobre planes que hicimos en el pasado y no sucedieron o no sucederán en el futuro. We are going to visit the Homers later that year, but we didn't go for some reason. (Nosotros planeábamos visitar a los Homer pero no lo hicimos) We were going to spend the weekend in Paris, but there was no free rooms. (íbamos a pasar el fin de semana en París, pero no vamos a ir allí). Usaremos was/were supposed to para hablar sobre cosas que nos pusimos de acuerdo para hacer, o que la gente espera que hagamos, pero que no hicimos.
